UNESCO condemns murder of reporter Yaqoub Sharafat in Afghanistan
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today called for an investigation into the killing of local broadcaster Yaqoub Sharafat in the city of Qalat in the south of Afghanistan.

"I condemn the murder of Yaqoub Sharafat," the Director-General said, "and I call on the authorities to investigate this crime. Violence against media workers undermines freedom of expression and press freedom, challenging democracy and rule of law."

Sharafat, a reporter for public broadcaster Radio Television Afghanistan, was shot by unknown assailants on 16 October.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization's General Conference of 1997, entitled "Condemnation of Violence against Journalists."
