UNESCO in Paris kicks off Nowruz observance with cultural event
The UNESCO, in Paris, took lead to kick off the celebrations of the Persian spring festival of Nowruz by organising a cultural event at its headquarters with the delegates from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Iraq, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan present at the event.

The event was marked with colourful Persian cultural performances and traditional cuisine of the participating countries.

With the proclamation of Nowruz as tangible cultural heritage and recognition of March 21 as Nowruz Day by the UN, the observance provides an opportunity to know the ancient culture and customs, traditional songs, music, dancing, rituals, foods, poetry, games and folk story-telling skills.

It was in 2010 that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as International Nowruz Day and the festival of Nowruz was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.

In India, the festival will be celebrated by Parsi community marking the beginning of spring and Nowruz as New Year day. The day will be marked with cleaning and decorating homes, remembering ancestors, prayers, good food, new clothes and quality time with family members, friends and loved ones.
