Union health ministry to universalize HIV screening of pregnant women
In order to mitigate the risk of spread of HIV-AIDS, the Union Health Ministry has amended its HIV screening guidelines in a bid to universalise pregnant women testing by making even oral consent sufficient for it, informed a Facebook friend, who works in this field, with a post.
The guidelines have been amended to make screening efficient and treatment effective in a bid to enhance chances of eliminating HIV-AIDS by 2020 in the country by universalizing HIV testing.

It is said that the move has been prompted by research-reports indicating high risk factor of HIV transmission to the child from an HIV positive pregnant mother.

According to survey-based government estimates, about 0.26 per cent adult population of India could be HIV positive with a sizable number of pregnant women.

The health ministry has got testing kits designed for pregnant women for both HIV and congenital syphilis with the help of WHO. It is said that the auxiliary Nurses and Midwives will be trained to administer tests to pregnant women.
