The UID is an ambitious venture but the whole programme has its own pit falls. The programme is going at a full swing but critics are worried about its completion.
THE UNIQUE Identification Card (UID), the project that will create a database for the huge population in India is surely an ambitious plan. Although many parts of India have started working on the UID yet there are people who feel that this is too big a plan to be correctly executed. The leading Cyber city Expert, R. Bhaskar, is quite apprehensive about the whole UID plan.
Talking to a reputed media, Bhaskar was quoted saying that the facility is ambitious and is sure to make functioning easy from the governance perspective. But at the moment, it is not clear how the government's plan for UID will work out. His main concern is that the companies who have taken up the task should give some sort of certificate or guarantee.
The UID is as we all know a government’s number one priority programme that aims to give a single number to one person that would work as his/her identity for the rest of their life. If this programme is correctly executed than the future hassles would clearly be less for the government and the people at large.
The programme is chaired by Nanadan Nilekani and the programme has started at the right foot with appointed registrars all around India to aid the registration process. These registrars who are government departments have given their responsibilities to the agencies to collect the initial data.
Wipro, Comat Technologies, Alankit are some of the agencies who are involved in the accumulation of the data. After the initial data collection the information would be verified and then within 20-30 days the 12 digit number would be delivered to the concerned person at their home.
On a daily basis a total of 1,50,000 enrolments are happening each day and by October the number of enrolment is expected to be six million per day. The task is no doubt daunting but if the aims are achieved then everything from then would run smoothly.
