United States and Canada observe April as Autism awareness month
In the US and Canada, the Autism Society and other non-profit organizations, have launched nationwide efforts to promote autism awareness and fund raising activities for the complete month of April.

According to the Autism Society (AS), "Nearly a quarter century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. This year we want to go beyond simply promoting autism awareness to encouraging friends and collaborators to become partners in movement toward acceptance and appreciation."

The AS has urged people to run month-long campaigns to ensure acceptance and inclusion of autistc children in schools and communities that results in true appreciation of the unique aspects of all people.

According to AS, autism affects 1 in 68 children in the US now. Being a brain condition, autism can't be cured, but education and treatment can help.

Autism is viewed as a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. Nonetheless, such children can learn but at a very slow speed with the help of special educators.
