Up close and personal with Dust Clinic
In an interaction with Neeraj Radhakrishnan, Gurgaon-based rock band Dust Clinic explains the purpose of their presence in the Delhi rock circle, and why profit-making is not their sole objective.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE once famously said that if music be the food for love, play on. Living up to every inch of their love is Dust Clinic, a Gurgaon-based classic rock band. The band, which draws inspiration from other legendary rock bands such as AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, tune their vocal and guitar chords in such a manner that one can be instantly convinced that these musicians are here for just one purpose-entertainment.
The lead vocalist for the band Saurabh Adeeb, who works with a leading search engine said Dust Clinic started out with a mail in which he was seeking a rock guitarist. Such is Saurabh’s passion for music that after trying out places such as Bangalore and Hyderabad, he wanted to flirt with Delhi’s rock circuit. This is where the lead guitarist of the band, Vivek Nair, comes into the picture. Vivek, a doctor by profession, is more dedicated to his music than he is to his profession, at least that’s what I could make out after hearing him strum those six strings. In his free time or to say, when he is not making music, you can find him collecting guitars, and today he boasts of twelve imported guitars powered by the best amps.
Explaining the association, Saurabh added that initially when he came to know that a ‘doctor’ would be taking over the guitars, apprehensions were there. But once they started to jam, they figured out that they share the same likes, and after that setting the right tone did not seem a daunting task.
As Saurabh explained the brands of the instruments that the band uses, I was later informed that the bassist of the band Andrew Lallawmzuala has been a veteran in the rock scene. As my focus shifted towards him, he proudly talked about his bass guitar, which sports a contemporary look.
Andrew explained that his guitar has played a major role in most of the songs that have rolled out of Mizoram in the last twenty years! Hence, the guitar’s contemporary look was justified. The modest bassist, a doctor too by profession has been associated in several gigs with major bands like Parikrama and many other but shies away from admitting it. Owing to Andrew’s veteran status in the band, when asked what his strategy to get heard more often was, he said that as of today there is no better apparatus than online media apart from making best original music. However, he also maintains that Dust Clinic is not here for profits but for having fun and playing quality music. None of them feel threatened as everyone has a full time job and money making is not their sole objective.
Voicing the same concern was Dhawal Sharma, the drummer of the band and another founder member. Dhawal said that since all of them just get a day in a week for practising, they do their individual parts at home and maximise the output whenever the band catches up. Since their jam sessions include covers and originals, their prima facie objective is to do away with covers and make way for original compositions.
Speaking of original composition, the band has come up with one so far titled ‘Lost in Time’ and has also performed across various venues in Delhi/NCR. The band is soon expected to record more originals by January.
