UP elections 2017: First phase polling begins for 73 seats in western UP
Voting has begun in the first phase of 2017 UP assembly elections on Saturday. There are 73 assembly seats in western UP for which polling is taking place today. The elections in UP will be conducted in seven phases.

The 73 seats are spread across 15 districts and there are 839 candidates whose fates will be sealed in EVMs today. There are around 2.59 crore voters who are eligible to cast their votes today. Of the total, 1.42 crore are men, 1.17 crore women and 1,511 are from the third gender.

In the 2012 assembly elections, of the 73 seats the ruling Samajwadi Party had won 24, BSP 23, BJP 12, Rashtriya Lok Dal 9 and the Congress 5 seats.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh's son Pankaj Singh is contesting from Noida seat and BJP's national secretary Srikant contesting from Mathura.

Meanwhile, UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has appealed to public to cast their votes and help in the state's development.



Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also urged the voters to participate in the first phase of polling in large numbers.
