UP government cancels 15 public holidays in the state
On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to cancel 15 public holidays that mark the birth or death anniversaries of eminent personalities.

As per the decision, instead of providing a public holiday on these days, students in schools and colleges would now be taught about those eminent personalities on whose births or deaths these days fall.

The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

"The Cabinet has cancelled 15 public holidays marking the anniversaries of great personalities. Students will now be taught on these days about these figures through various programmes," Cabinet Minister Shrikant Sharma said in a press briefing held after the Cabinet meeting.

Earlier, the UP CM, in his address on the occasion of BR Ambedkar's 126th birth anniversary, had said that because of so many public holidays, the academic session was shrinking.

"There should be no holidays in schools on birth anniversaries of great personalities. Instead, a special two-hour programme should be held to teach students about them," Adityanath had said.

"The 220-day academic session has been reduced to only 120 days due to such holidays and if this tradition continues, there will be no day left for teaching in schools," the CM added.

Out of 42 public holidays in the state of Uttar Pradesh, at least 17 are related to the birth anniversaries of eminent personalities.

Sharma also said that the revised list of holidays will soon be made available.

The holidays that have been cancelled also include Maharshi Kashyap and Maharaj Guna anniversary, Cheti Chand (Sindhi new year), birth anniversary of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti's anniversary, Maharana Pratap's anniversary, Maharaja Agrasen's birth anniversary, last Friday of Ramzan, Vishwakaram puja, Chhath festival, Mahrshi Valmiki jayanti, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Acharya Narendra Deva birth anniversaries, Id-e-Milad, and former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh's birth anniversary.
