UP man cuts off wife's nose over dowry demand
In what could only be described as brutal, a man identified as Sanjeev Rathore (27) has been accused of chopping off his wife's nose as her family could not fulfill his demand for dowry.

The incident happened in Shahjahanpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh on September 14. Kamlesh Rathore (25) said that her husband Sanjeev had been demanding dowry of Rs 50,000 from her family ever since they had got married.

Kamlesh said, "He harassed me every day for the dowry. He was constantly demanding Rs 50,000. I repeatedly told him that my father is very poor and he cannot afford such an amount but he did not listen and used to threaten me that he'll chop off my nose."

She further adds, "He has beaten me for years. He's used belts, slippers, sticks and has always tortured me. He used to accuse me of working as a prostitute and threaten to sell me. He was always drunk. During our eight years of marriage he was very harsh with me."

On September 14, when Kamlesh was cooking dinner, Sanjeev started shouting and demanding money again. She said that suddenly, her in-laws came from behind and pinned her down and her husband chopped off her nose.

Kamlesh while recalling the incident said, "They all grabbed me tightly. I could not move. And then out of nowhere I saw a knife and he chopped off my nose."

Kamlesh, who is the mother of a six-year old daughter, said that her husband and in-laws fled after chopping off her nose.

His last words were: "You'll now be like this forever".

Kamlesh quickly summoned her parents who live nearby. They rushed her to the nearest medical centre. She was bleeding heavily and the doctors were able to dress her wound. However, they could not reattach her nose as Sanjeev had taken it along with him.

Kamlesh's elder brother, Sachin (26) said that the family was poor and could not afford any further surgeries to fix her nose.

Sachin said, "My sister's husband is very cruel. He has given her a terrible life and now this. He even took her nose and gifted it to the gods at his temple. He's a sick man."

Manoj Kumar, Superintendent of Khutar police station in Shahjahanpur said that the husband and the family were on the run.

He said, "An FIR is registered. This is a dowry case and the family were demanding money. We're still chasing the husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister and brother-in-law. Until we catch them we cannot say anymore."
