BOTH HOUSES of Parliament witnessed adjournment over the issue of downgrading the security of some senior politicians in the wake of changing threat perceptions. The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Thursday by irate BSP members over the the reported move to downgrade the security of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
As soon as the Lok Sabha began proceedings at 11am, angry BSP MPs rushed to the Speaker's seat and shouted slogans against the move. Despite a request from the Speaker that they could raise the issue during zero hour, BSP members did not relent, forcing the speaker to adjourn the house for half an hour. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice, as BSP members created a storm over the issue.
There has been an ongoing review of the security of various VVIPs and VIPs in view of current threat perceptions. It is believed that home ministry officials had proposed that security of some top ranking VVIPs should be whittled down in accordance with their official status and the threat perception to them. Mayawati, Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi and BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, are among those politicians whose security could be downgraded, according to the review.
Though the security requirement and threat perception is examined by officials of the home department, the final decision in this regard is taken by the home minister. Home ministry officials have had three meetings so far to examine the security cover being given to 395 VIPs in the capital. Security cover may be either whittled down or removed in some cases. The final decision has to be taken by the home minister. The government, however, denied any plans to downgrade the security of the BSP leader or other leaders. The matter was only resolved after it was assured that there would be no reduction in the security cover extended to these leaders.
