According to media reports, 59-60 tomahawk missiles were fired at Shayrat airfield base in Syria destroying the majority of infrastructures including hangars, airstrips and control towers.
Barbara Lee, a Democrat condemned the attack on Syria and termed it as an act of war. Lee, expressing her opinion, wrote on Twitter, "This is an act of war. Congress needs to come back into session & hold a debate. Anything less is an abdication of our responsibility."
Syrian army issued a statement on Friday morning after the US attack on its airfield and said that six personnel lost their lives whereas big material loss also happened due to American airstrikes.
Trump changed his stance on Syria after Tuesday's chemical attack in Idlib province of Syria. Trump was completely against the involvement of US forces in Syria and had previously attacked former President Obama for alleged adventurism in the Middle-East, especially in Syria.
US has blamed the Syrian government led by Bashar al Assad for the chemical attack whereas UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura and the Syrian government denounced the brutal assault by American forces on its sovereign land which damaged its airfield and caused the casualties of six personnel.
Homs governor Talal Balazi reiterated the government's stance of continued fighting against the terrorists. He further added that he is not surprised by seeing America and Israel supporting terrorism. Terrorist groups hailed the airstrikes by American forces as they were provided with another chance to survive. Israel, KSA, Turkey, UK and few other countries supported and hailed the missiles attack of US forces on Syria whereas Iran, Russia and Bolivia opposed the attack on a sovereign country by US forces.
Bolivia even requested a closed door UNSC meeting to be held to discuss the current scenario. Russia not only condemned the attack but gave a warning to the US. According to presstv.com, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Vladimir Safronkov said, "All responsibility of military action occurs will be on the shoulders of those who initiated such a doubtful tragic enterprise."
Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Bahram Qassemi condemned the unilateral provocative and destructive attack on Syria. He said, "The Islamic Republic, as the biggest victim of chemical weapons in modern history, condemns any application of such weapons, regardless of the perpetrators and victims." He also raised the question on the timing and benefactors of chemical attack by adding, "the timing, perpetrators, and benefactors of (the chemical attack) are still shrouded in mystery."
United Nations which was formed after World War II with an objective of securing and safeguarding the sovereignty of all the nations from unilateral attacks by powerful countries has failed miserably in recent years. After American unilateral action adventurism in Middle-East and rest of the world by imposing wars, Saudi royal family also started its own adventurism in Yemen and till now UN is mere spectator.
Today's missile attack on Syria is no more different when US forces have attacked a free nation on the mere basis of an accusation of use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government whereas it is no more secret that terrorist groups in Syria also have stockpiles of such dangerous weapons.
Syria is already fighting a lengthy war against terrorism which was originally created by US and its allies especially KSA, Turkey and Qatar. After six long years of destructive war, Syria is emerging victorious against all odds. But these types of attacks by US forces can jeopardise the whole momentum achieved so far after a long period of distress. We also need to understand who is going to get the benefits of such US attacks on Syria. Surely, it is not for the people of Syria.
