At least 50 people are reported to have been killed when a Bangladeshi airliner crashed while attempting to land at Nepal's Kathmandu airport on Monday.

Crashing of the aircraft being operated by US-Bangla Airlines at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal's capital Kathmandu was confirmed by an airport official.

New agency Reuters quoted an army officer as saying that at least 50 people had died in the crash, albeit, Nepal Police spokesperson Manoj Neupane has said that only 40 people have died. He said that while 31 bodies had been recovered from the site, nine others injured died at the hospital.

According to airport authorities, the fire in the aircraft had been brought under control and rescue efforts were underway. As per officials, 25 people had been rescued from the aircraft and sent to nearby hospitals.

The aircraft, a twin-engine turboprop, was carrying 67 passengers and four crew members. The aircraft was en route to Kathmandu from Bangladesh's capital Dhaka. The aircraft reportedly skidded off the runway and ventured into a football field after overshooting the runway.

Out of the total 67 passengers, 33 were Nepalese nationals. However, there is no confirmation on whether any Indian nationals were on board the aircraft. The passengers included 37 men, 27 women and two children.

The Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft crashed at around 2.20 pm local time and immediately caught fire.

"The aircraft was permitted to land from the southern side of the runway flying over Koteshwor but it landed from the northern side," said director general of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal Sanjiv Gautam.

All flight flying in and out of Tribhuvan International Airport were cancelled.

US-Bangla Airlines is a private airline operating since 2014 from Bangladesh's domestic airports.
