US diplomat's racist comment against Tamils
In her speech, Vice Consul of the US Consulate in Chennai, Maureen Chao, used offensive language against Tamilians. She called them 'black' and 'dirty'.
ALTHOUGH IT was a slip of tongue, she spoke what America and other western countries think about us. It is not their mistake but ours. Indians visiting or staying in western countries fail to show self respect. I once visited CNN headquarters as a tourist. We were asked to introduce ourselves and speak about out countries.
While tourists from other countries spoke proudly about their nations, Indians did so with lack of confidence and pride. This irritated me and furious I climbed up the podium and announce in a proud manner that I was from the great country INDIA. I was applauded by all present in the hall, except for the Indians present.
While travelling in the US, if you are confronted by a foreigner, he/she will probably address you as "Bloody Indian ....". But, the sad part is no Indian ever protests. I too had to face a similar situation once, but when I tried to slap this racist person an Indian cam running and convinced me not to do so. These are small example s of how we project ourselves.
Do Indian politicians ever care to wear our traditional dress when travelling abroad? No, they wear coats and pants try to behave like a crow with peacock tail.
So what is wrong in her comments, I do not understand. First the politicians will have to learn to respect and love their country and then pass on the message to the masses.
