US: Hillary Clinton is the new Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton has become the first former First Lady to hold the top US diplomat post. Clinton was sworn in as the new Secretary of State replacing Rice, after her nomination was confirmed by the US Senate, by a majority of 94 to 2.
FORMER FIRST lady, Hillary Clinton has succeeded Condoleezza Rice as the top US diplomat. Clinton was sworn in as the 67th Secretary of State, on Wednesday (January 21), after her nomination was confirmed by the US Senate, by a majority of 94 to 2.
Former US President and her husband, Bill Clinton, held the sacred Bible belonging to the former first lady's late father, when Hillary took the oath.
Senator Cornyn later voted in favour of Hillary.
Republicans said that her swift confirmation was necessary so that Obama administration could begin tackling the major pressing foreign policy issues in hand.
Meanwhile, John McCain, Obama's Republican rival in the presidential elections last year, also spoke in favour of Clinton.
Republican Senators, David Vitter of Louisiana and Jim DeMint of South Carolina, were the only two lone Senators who voted against Clinton.
Clinton submitted her resignation as senator in twin letters to Vice President Joe Biden, as president of the Senate, and New York governor David Paterson.
