THE UNITED States has honoured Mother Teresa by issuing a postal stamp in her name. The Mother was the diminutive Roman Catholic nun and honorary US citizen, who served the sick and destitute of India for nearly 50 years and India will hardly forget her noble service to her people. Award-winning artist Thomas Blackshear II designed the stamp costing 44 cent, it was released on the 13th anniversary of Mother Teresa's death, at a special ceremony held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.
United States Postmaster General John Potter said that stamps are referred to as a nation's calling cards because stamps reach a national and even an international audience. The whole world has highest regards, respect and affection for Mother Teresa, who believed so deeply in the innate worth and dignity of humankind and worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor, sick, orphaned and dying.
Albania born Mother Teresa became a citizen of India in 1948. She died in Kolkata Sep 5, 1997. Her beatification was presided over by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003, in Saint Peter's Basilica, Rome.
Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, Kolkatta and was honoured by Nobel Peace prize in 1979. She offered her service to poor, the hungry, the sick and the lonely and convinced the organisers to donate to the needy the money normally used to fund the awards banquet. Mother was well respected in worldwide; she fruitfully recommended many of the world's business and political leaders to give their time and resources to help those in need. Countries around the world awarded various medals and awards to Mother Teresa for her outstanding and enduring contributions through humanitarian and charitable activities.
Former US President Ronald Reagan presented Mother Teresa with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985, the same year she began work on behalf of AIDS sufferers in the US and other countries.
In India, special prayers and floral tributes were offered at the grave of Mother Teresa and hundreds of her admirers gathered for a Mass at St Xavier's College ground Kolkatta on the occasion of her 13th death anniversary, observed the world over as her 'feast day'. Mother is no more with us but Missionary of Charities still attract the visitors from all over the world.
