While players like Rohan Bopanna, Mahesh Bhupathi and Somdev Devvarman has been shown the exit door, Sania Mirza and Leander Paes have progressed into the quarter-finals, keeping afloat Indian hopes of the US Open 2012 title.
THE US Open has reached the business
end of the competition. Leander Paes and Sania Mirza are the only two Indian players who are still going strong in the ongoing US Open. Paes has reached the quarter-finals of the men's doubles as well as mixed doubles competition, whereas Sania Mirza has been knocked out of the women's doubles competition, but still stands firm in the mixed doubles competition, where she is partnering Colin Fleming from Great Britain, but are unseeded in the competition.
Other Indians in the fray such as Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, who paired up as a team lost in the first round of the doubles competition. This was a big blow to the Indian hopes, as they were seeded eighth in the championship, but failed to live up to the expectations, like London Olympics
. Bopanna and Bhupathi also failed to progress much in the mixed doubles competition with their respective female partners. Somdev Devvarman in the singles category could not impress much as he also faltered in the first round after losing to a Spaniard, Ramirez Hidalgo with the score reading 6-3, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-4, reported Zee News. So, the Indian hopes of winning US Open title rests on Sania and Paes' shoulders.
Paes along with Radek Stepanek has been a very strong doubles pair in the ATP, where they have won some titles together. They have been seeded fifth in the competition. They have shown good form en route to the quarter-finals of the competition, so it would not be surprising if this Indo-Czech pair goes all the way. But, they need to be on top of their game, if they are to clinch the title, which could be Paes' third US Open title and eighth grand slam title overall (men's doubles). It could be a huge achievement for Paes. The pair has not dropped a single set in the competition, which only makes their case stronger.
Paes' fight does not end here as he is partnering Elena Vesnina in the mixed doubles competition, who are seeded third in the competition. Paes and Sania could face one another during the finals of the mixed doubles, provided both win their quarter-finals and semi-finals clash against their opponents. If Paes wins the mixed doubles title, it would be his seventh and if Mirza wins, it would be her third mixed doubles title.
