A day after some major upsets at the U.S. Open, Sunday saw some of the big names making it to the next round. Women’s top seed Dinara Safina, Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick were the upsets in action on Saturday. Even after being defeated at the Grand Slam, Safina will still retain the top spot.

Serena Williams defeated Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The No.2 seed fired eight aces and 27 winners in a match that lasted for just over an hour. She advances to the quarter finals, without dropping a set in her previous encounters in the tournament this year.

Serena is looking for her second consecutive and fourth U.S. Open title and her fourth Grand Slam of the last five contested. Williamns will face the winner of Sunday’s other match between No.7 Russian Vera Zvonareva  and No. 10 Italian Flavia Pennetta.

In the men’s singles, Rafael Nadal of Spain defeated countryman Nicolas Almargo 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. Nadal who calimed to be all fit after a knee injury which kept him out of action for quite sometime, was seen struggling a bit due to the knee injury. He will next play the winner between No.13 Gael Monfils of France and Argentina’s Jose Acasuso.

Fernando Gonzalez of Chile beat 17th seed Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. Gonzalez will either meet 7th seed Jo Wilfried Tsongo or Julian Benneteau, both from France.
