US Open update: Nadal, Clijsters advance to next round
The Wimbledon and French Open champion Nadal defeated 39th-ranked Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 7-5. He will now face Frenchman Gilles Simon in the third round, who beat German Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.

AT THE US Open 2010, top seed Rafael Nadal and reigning women's champion Kim Clijsters advanced into their next rounds.

The Wimbledon and French Open champion Nadal defeated 39th-ranked Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 7-5. He will now face Frenchman Gilles Simon in the third round, who beat German Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.

The world number one will be the only seventh man to complete a career Grand Slam, if he wins this US Open.

Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams advanced into the round of 16, when they won their respective matches. Clijsters beat Czech Wimbledon semi-finalist Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-0. She will face former world number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the round of 16.

Venus Williams sent off Luxembourg's Mandy Minella in straight sets taking the match 6-2, 6-1. She will face Israeli 16th seed Shahar Peer for a quarter-final berth. 


British fourth seed Andy Murray defeated Jamaican Dustin Brown 7-5, 6-3, 6-0 in straight sets to set up a clash with Swiss 25th seed Stanislas Wawrinka. Wawrinka beat Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Murray is seeking his first Grand Slam title which he missed many times in lat few years.

Francesca Schiavone, Italian sixth seed, stormed into fourth round as she defeated Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko 6-1, 7-5.

American fans were happy to see their flags fluttering high as Sam Querrey and John Isner won their respective matches. Querrey, the 20
th seed, won his match against Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Isner defeated Swiss Marco Chiudinelli 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-4 in a relatively longer match.

Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) win over 18-year-old US qualifier Ryan Harrison in a five setter was the heartbroke of the day for the US fans.

Argentina's David Nalbandian, who missed the last six Grand Slams was back on a winning streak as he ousted Frenchman Florent Serra 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the third round.
