US President Barack Obama expels 35 Russian diplomats
In a new low in the US-Russia relations, President Obama has expelled 35 Russian diplomats. The decision was announced as a retaliation for Russian efforts to interfere in the US presidential elections. The Obama administration has imposed new sanctions that included the expulsion of 35 Russians.
The US intelligence services believe that Russia was involved in cyber-attacks on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Hillary Clinton's campaign. These attacks were done in order to favor the Republican candidate, Donald Trump. The President-elect, Trump was also taken in confidence by the Obama administration in regard to these sanctions.

On the other hand, a Putin spokesman said Russia regretted the new sanctions. Russia is also considering retaliatory measures. The 35 Russian diplomats who are expelled, they are intelligence operatives. The state department has declared them "persona non grata" and they will be given 72 hours to leave the country.

Russia has been denied access to compounds in Maryland and New York that were used for intelligence-related purposes. A spokesperson for President Putin said that the Kremlin's reaction would cause the US "significant discomfort".

Russia has denied any involvement in hacking. Sanctions have been announced against nine Russian entities including two Russian intelligence agencies, the GRU and the FSB. The US intelligence agencies, including the FBI and CIA, believe that the aim of the hack was to cause damage to Mrs Clinton and favour Trump.
