Useful tips for growing small flowering cacti indoors as a hobby
Many small cacti that grow well indoors as potted plants can be raised as a hobby to enjoy their colourful flowers as they bloom near the rainy season. My wife has been keeping two cacti varieties which are a few inches tall as a gardening hobbyist. She tends and cares for these cacti and when they bloom, I take their pictures.

"Since small home-kept indoor cacti are succulents and produce striking colourful flowers in variety of shapes, they require only a few hours direct sunlight daily and should be kept near window. However, it is useful to keep them in the direct sunlight once in a while in the open to make sure that whole plant receives the sunlight for healthy growth and lasts for many years. Never allow the small flower-bearing cacti to turn yellow or white which happen due to lack of sunlight," she tells her neighbour who came in to admire the flowers that bloomed this summer.

Mini-cacti need well-drained semi-arid soil and need to be watered once or twice a week. She informs, "When the top one to two centimetres of the top soil gets dry then watering is required to moisten the soil thoroughly. Water as much as just to soak the soil. Water should not stay in the pots having cacti and there is a need to keep two-three holes near the bottom of the pot so that excess water soon drains out. Watering during summer should be done weekly and monthly during winter since it the dormant period for them."

She adds that a very little amount of manure is required by small cacti once during spring season. "This is done by adding decayed leaves or a few pinches of dung in the water to be sprinkled but only once in a year."

She gave the neighbour address of a nursery from where he could buy a small cacti already potted in a container and grow it indoors to add interest and colour to his living room.
