"By providing economic and emotional sustenance to their members, families can raise productive, caring citizens committed to the common good. Strong, well-functioning families, whatever form they may take, can help reduce poverty, improve the wellbeing of mothers, promote gender equality and uphold human rights," added Ban.
The UN has also declared this year as the "Year of the Family" to stress the importance of family as a basic unit of the society. It was 20 years ago, the UN had founded the IDF to provide an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families, asserts the UN.
I am also of the opinion that in this technological age we need to strengthen family-centered components of policies and programmes as part of an integrated comprehensive approach to education and development. Otherwise, the new age technologies will become the dangerous tools of social isolation in educational institution and families.
On the occasion of International Day of Families, my FBF, who is the principal of a school, stressed the need for the family model of schooling based on the values of cooperation, respect for diversity and social equity and deemphasizing the factory and corporate models of schooling that believe in uniformity, similarity, competition and smart digital technologies.
