Using Deepawali festival as a tool to engineer required social changes
Deepawali, as per traditional belief in majority parts of India, is a festival marking the day of return of Sri Rama and Sita to the holy land from exile after killing Ravana. For most of the Hindus, at least for those living in this part of India, it is the biggest day in their calendar.

Rama is the biggest investor and unionist India has produced till date. He is the most acceptable deity among the Hindu pantheon and can be worshipped along with any other deity rather easily. The worship of Rama is also a bit easier, offering flowers and folding hands in front of his idol for a decent majority of the people.

But Rama, and through him the festival of Deepawali, can be used to bring the required social changes among Hindus. Hindus require somewhat homogenization of beliefs and also a proper institutionalization of Hinduism. Many Hindus also require some relief from age-old bondage of caste-apartheid.

Rama espouses equality and equity like no other deity does provided some exaggerations in Valmiki?s Ramayana?s are properly understood and thereafter appropriately scaled. In the passing remarks, it should be emphasized that Krishna supports the dominance of Brahmins like no other deity does; not even Manu.

Now Deepawali can be used to propose the uplifting of lower castes and outcasts. This is particularly true for outcasts; many among whom do menial jobs. For that some limited automation and more usage of machines can be proposed to stop such people doing humiliating works. This would increase the cost of service and other utilities to some extent but in order to make India more equal and lesser suppressive that can be considered tolerable and therefore, can be tried out. While if this sounds somewhat inflationary overall, a part of it can be tried on the days of Deepawali in some parts of India and in elite localities round the year.

Proper tool management can let a traditional society become lesser coercive and more humane. Other than proposed mechanization and automation, the idea of choice should be given to the lowest strata. This should not sound a weird academic argument to serious people. This is real and would have real impact on India?s social structures and institutions, if accepted.

The lower class workers should be trained more on the individualistic and capitalistic aspects of works and should be able to provide option-based services where payments matter minimally as much as social and other duty obligations.

Now one can ask, what is the relationship of above proposals with Deepawali? Nothing and everything for Hindus; it depends from person to person. If one is a Hindu and believes in Rama properly then he and she would understand that Rama?s purpose, other than creating Brahmin caste and envisioning Indian nation of ancient times having some relations with the present one, was to promote equality and harmony in Indian society to the extent possible. Taking his name and believing in his words, many Hindus can understand the utility of more equal and equitable Indian society.

Such a proposal would obviously induce caste-based reactions from many among upper caste Hindus though not too many would like to react so openly and overtly in public. But there is something for such people as well and it is that the proposed social engineering should be accompanied with greater unity among the upper caste Hindus and if possible and required, such should be extended to its supra group known as upper caste people.

Bringing such changes require more than political courage and some legislative works. It requires deep thinking and introspection among the dominant people. If they agree then such changes are possible but if they don?t, then all other efforts in this regard are mostly meaningless as people cannot be changed by mere paper-works. But one thing is certain that if Ishavra's name is taken while trying to implement such changes then it would be a lot easier.

Otherwise, only rising and conflicting consciousness, external interferences and markets? diktats could induce such proposed changes. In order to lower down the transaction costs and to have greater independence, the better option for all Indians would be to allow themselves such changes to take place at the earliest possible time in the easiest possible manner. Let all Indians live dignified lives in the most harmonious and theistic way, which is probable and feasible. Let there be as much opportunities and options as possible for as many people as possible.

But in the end, nobody should abuse caste system beyond a point because it is the same system, which is responsible for India?s present demography and geography. The solution to India?s growing social problems and inequity is the investment into the future without being bitter and acrimonious about the past.

Justice in India can come only through consensus of the dominant people and not by accusations and curse. Revolutions, upheavals and mutinies are rarely possible in India. In this regard I propose calling lower caste Hindus as Vishayajana; the people of faith, and outcasts as Samapriya; equally adorable people. I think, it is the small changes that can bring big changes but all need to accept that Indians are mostly good people and all targeted changes in future can only bank on that assumption.
