Uttar Pradesh's Kashi celebrates Guru Purnima with fervour and devotion, PM Modi greets people
In Uttar Pradesh's Kashi, which is also the part parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the festival of Guru Purnima was celebrated with great fervour and devotion in various ashramas, muthas and education institutions with special events to honour the gurus, spiritual leaders, noted performers and teachers.

Local Muslim community is reported to have joined the event at Ashrama of Mahant Balak Das and participated in the Aarti. They also honoured the Mahant for spreading the message of peace and communal harmony.

Across the country, Guru Purnima was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Hindus, Buddhists and the Jains. The festival was celebrated by the Buddhists in remembrance of the Buddha, who gave his first sermon on this day at Sarnath.

Many Hindus celebrated the festival to pay homage to sage Maharshi Veda Vyasa, who is credited for establishing guru-shishya tradition.

According to Jain traditions, the festival is observed as Treenok Guha Purnima, and is marked special veneration to one's Treenok Guhas, monks and teachers. The day also marks the beginning of Chaumasaas, which is the four month rainy season retreat for Jain monks.

Also, various alumni visited or greeted their teachers to express gratitude for their contribution in building their lives.

On the occasion of Guru Purnima on July 27, PM Modi greeted people with the message, "Guru Purnima greetings to everyone. Ours is a society that holds teachers in very high esteem. We thank our teachers, who always inspire and bring out the best in us."
