Valentine's Day shocker: Oscar Pistorius turns murderer from national icon
South African athlete Oscar Pistorius was known as one of the most spirited athletes in the world, and was respected in many nations. But, it has all come down in a crash for the double-amputee sprinter, after he shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his home at Pretoria. Pistorius is said to have fired four bullets at Reeva, including a head shot, on Valentine's Day.
The entire sporting fraternity has been shell-shocked by this act of Pistorius, who is also known as blade runner. Initially, there were reports stating that it was a Valentine surprise gone horribly wrong - that the athlete had shot her thinking her to be a burglar, reported zeenews. It was a bloody scene when the police reached the house where the episode had taken palce. The girl was lying in a puddle of blood, and soon Pistorius was charged with murder. The police even found a 9 mm pistol inside his residence.
The Associated Press reported that originally the hearing for the case was scheduled to take place on Thursday evening, but it was later post-poned to Friday morning. This would give the forensic investigators plenty of time to carry out their work in a proficient manner. It has been stated by the police that they are going to oppose the bail application as well. Rest assured, the road ahead is not going to be an easy one for Pistorius.
There is no conclusive evidence to suggest as to what exactly transpired that led to the killing of the 30-year-old girl, Reeva Steenkamp - who was set to make her debut on a reality television show. But according to the police, previously too, they had received calls about domestic violence from the athlete's residence.
The South African athlete, who had brought laurels to the country, soon began to trend on twitter. One tweet from tweet handle, @kvinay222 read, “If Lance Armstrong and Oscar Pistorius have taught us anything, it's don't trust athletes with missing body parts.” Another tweet from @haksy89 read, “When Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend said she wanted to be taken out on Valentine's Day, I don't think she meant it that way.” Another tweet from @C_Hammeren read, “Oscar Pistorius killed his hot girlfriend.
If Pstorius is found guilty, his achievements of two gold medals and a silver at last September’s Paralympic Games in London, and his participation in the 2012 London Games, while noteworthy, will forever be tainted, and his record side-lined.
