‘VALKYRIE’ IS a film based on true story of assassinating Adolf Hitler. It is story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg and a daring and ingenious plot to eliminate one of the world’s most evil tyrant. It is a story of a military man, who loyally serves his country, hoping that that someone will find a way to stop Hitler; and save innocent lives in Europe and Germany from further destruction.
But when he realises that time is running out, he steps out and decides to act himself and joins German Resistance movement. He makes an intricate strategy of using Hitler’s own reserved army and its emergency plans, known as ‘Operation Valkyrie’, in his motive. It involves a group of men hidden inside the highest reaches of power to help him to execute the plan.
‘Valkyrie’ keeps you at your seats edge all the time. There is not a moment of lag in the storyline. The film keeps to an authentic portrayal of the story, on which it has been based. Every character and every role seems to be in place with the screenplay. It is a film that plays on high excitement quotient, just as most films based on historical incidents do. You are left to wonder what happens next and feel the emotions that the protagonist, played by Tom Cruise, goes through.
It is entirely an actor-oriented role and Tom Cruise’s portrayal of Colonel Stauffenberg is commendable. It sure seems to be an award winning performance and Cruise’s best one. Cruise does fully justice his character and every emotion that he feels. Even Kenneth Branagh and Bill Nighy act well in their characters. It is a film based solely on the actors who make the central storyline and every line etched there seems to enhance the levels of pulse racing incidents.
Overall, it is a very good film, whether seen in context of its historical portrayal or as a stand alone performance. It is a superbly made thriller. It’s quite a worth watch as it keeps you on the edge of your seat all the time. I would give the film four out of five stars.
