Values stand in the way of equality for Indian women
We are all products of our upbringing and environment. Ours has been a traditionally patriarchal society. Males are brought up to lord over women and women are taught to serve them. In such a society can women ever be empowered?
WE THINK and talk about equality; when will India be ready to have 50% reservation for males in dowry, household chores, etc.?

Being independent, it is easy for me to raise this issue. Some of my sisters around India may appreciate this; some may not like the idea of the issue because of our strong traditional system. And of course more than 90% males will not be ready to accept it. Most of them have grown up internalizing values that teach them that the house hold is a woman’s domain. Even if the woman is earning.

The cultural mooring of our country has become intellectually binding. We can’t seem to grow beyond it mentally. This perception of women as inherently inferior must change before our women can be truly empowered.

Women in India are educated but not enough to know their rights properly. A more aware female population will contribute more to national growth. It is in everybody’s interests to let women come forward.
