Vandalizing toll plazas by MNS, a perfect example of populist anarchism
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) vandalizing toll plazas in different parts of the state with a dictate ‘not to pay levy and thrash who opposes it’ is a perfect example of populist anarchism as referred by President in his speech on the eve of Republic day. Unfortunately Raj Thackeray still believes in hooliganism and mobocracy to serve public interest.

MNS, which came out of Shiv Sena follows extreme regionalism in a violent manner. Raj Thackeray perhaps thinks in Maharashtra that he is above the law and whatever he decides, that is the only verdict. He perhaps forgets that he is in a democracy, where anarchism is neither accepted nor tolerated. If there is a BOT project, there must be a valid agreement on which the toll is collected.

A state government is legally bound to facilitate the toll collection else liable to pay compensation to the concessionaire. Thus by vandalizing toll booths, he might be temporarily affecting fund collection of the concessionaire but the agencies can get back their money with interest through legal course.

Thus, this populist anarchism by Raj Thackeray's MNS has brought shame to the state. Further with such acts, the investors will be discouraged to invest in infrastructures in this particular state. Thus honourable President rightly calls such acts (violent or non-violent) as populist anarchism and never serves public interest.

One wonders as to why no action has been taken against Raj Thackeray and his entity? Answer is simple. Shiv Sena endorses such policies as the parent organization, hence remains silent. BJP is sincerely trying to take Raj on board for the upcoming elections as wel. Congress- NCP coalition knew that they are heading a strong anti-incumbency wave and Raj Thackeray could be advantageous for them like the previous election, if he puts his candidates, thus limit them to lip service.

During the last assembly election it was the MNS factor that helped them retain power. Therefore they wouldn’t be ready to take any action, rather indirectly support him to escape the law. Public too would happily agree with MNS as they are saved from paying toll fee. Thus everybody is indulged in opportunistic self interest, hence barring media, none raises the question.

Point is in the process, democracy is attacked by all. The rule of land is overruled. The dictatorship and unruly hooligan rule is being established inside Constitutional premises. If we ignore this issue, then we indirectly harm our democratic interest and give support to raise an anti-democratic monster.

When we don’t accept non-violent anarchism by AAP, how can we be silent on such violent anarchism? It needs to be remembered that no system, authority or political party will do anything against such populist anarchist until the real master of this democracy, the public, start objecting to such actions. The perfect punishment to such fringe elements is not to vote them in any condition. Else if today’s populist anarchism appears to be beneficial then tomorrow’s anarchist dictate would take away the freedom from the people. People need to introspect whether they need temporary benefit or long term interest.

Supreme Court should take sue motto cognizance of such blatant vandalism and hooliganism. In situations where governments, political parties and stakeholders cling to tactical restrain, it is duty of the Supreme Court to uphold the constitution and law of the land.
