Varanasi to host conference on 'Education for Achieving Millennium Development Goals'
An international conference on 'Education for Achieving Millennium Development Goals' will be organized at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, from 16-18 November 2013. The Faculty of Education and Alumni Association of Education of BHU are jointly hosting the conference.

According to the communiqué of the organizers, the United Nations has set eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) during its Millennium Summit in 2000 by following an adoption of the United Nations Millennium Declaration.

The aim of the MDGs was to encourage development by improving social and economic conditions in the world's poorest countries. They derive from earlier international development targets. All 193 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve the MGDs by 2015.

“Education has always been the strongest medium to realise the social aspirations. Thus, in achievement of MDGs too, the role of education could be crucial. Although, achieving universal primary education is one of the MDGs but without a viable and authentic education system the achievement of other MDGs also seem to be a distant dream. We are now way beyond the mid-point between adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the target date of 2015,” inform the conference organizers.

Accordingly, the conference will be holding deliberation over possibilities, opportunities and threats of education for achieving millennium development goals. It is being envisaged that a conglomeration of entire academic fraternity, policy makers, practitioners the theory builders will provide inputs during the conference to visualise the role of education in context of achieving millennium development goals.

Various themes of the conference will be: Achieving universal primary education; education for promoting gender equality and empowering women; education for ensuring environmental sustainability; environmental education; ethical education; education for developing a global partnership for development; education and its inter-relevance in solving contemporary issues.
