Varun Gandhi calls a spade a spade
Varun Gandhi, the youngest BJP MP was the only member of parliament to have gone to Ramlila Maidan to see Anna Hazare's protest fast and know the reaction of people firsthand. He would make use of first hand information in Lok Sabha when debating the bill

THE CHAT between Varun Gandhi and Sonia Singh on television is a frank one that explains why Anna Hazare went on a fast. It is the BJP that threw its weight behind the septuagenarian fasting protester that clinched the issue. Varun said rightly that a few years hence when a major change in governance is effected, people can look back to these years of Anna Hazare's protest. It is nice to know that Varun is the only MP to have gone to the Ramlila Maidan to give open support to the Anna movement against corruption

VARUN A MELLOWED MAN

When asked whether his presence at the Ramlila Maidan would inflame feelings of minorities who think that Anna's movement is an upper caste Hindu movement with so many Swamis and Sanyasis present on the dais. Varun, the youngest BJP Member of Parliament was emphatic in denying that Anna's movement had RSS support. He said that he represents a minority dominated constituency where Muslims, Sikhs and Christians outnumber the Hindus, the so-called majority community.

Varun chose to go  to the protest-fast venue to know and learn things for himself so that he could speak on it with a sense of authenticity. Varun also said that he has never said an unkind word against his cousin, Rahul Gandhi, because he treats family ties as sacrosanct and above party politics. The true family relations rise above political gains or losses.

All said and done, it is a good interview conducted in a free and frank atmosphere. Varun Gandhi came out in open and full support of Anna Hazare unlike his cousin Rahul Gandhi who had thrown a red herring into the parliamentary solution to the problem of corruption found by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Varun Gandhi denied that he was anti-minorities but did say that since he had spoken some unpalatable words in an election meeting, he has matured now. He is married and a more responsible person than ever before. Nevertheless if a commentator may add that mien and body language of Varun Gandhi bore out his transparency and truthfulness in the words that he spoke.
