Varun Gandhi makes a U-turn
Varun Gandhi in BJP always looks like a square peg in the round hole. How suffocating it might have been for him to put up with all the abuse, humiliation, character assassination and derogatory remarks that RSS / BJP juggernaut has been heaping upon his illustrious grandparents and family members.

Just for a cheap reward, he has been swallowing that for too long. In this article, I won't talk much about her mother Maneka Gandhi - a BJP leader and animal rights activist. She invariably needs a whole book to share her whims and the contradictions.<

It was so uncharacteristic of a scion of Nehru-Gandhi to speak the language that sounded the likes of Godse and Golwalkar. In March 2009, Varun Gandhi, the brilliant effulgent son of Maneka Gandhi and a BJP candidate from Pilibhit , enlightened this world about his ideas of valour and violence.

Media reports quoted him saying, "If anyone raises a finger towards Hindus or if someone thinks that Hindus are weak and leaderless, if someone thinks that these leaders lick our boots for votes, if anyone raises a finger towards Hindus, then I swear on Gita that I will cut that hand."

The Congress, headed by Varun's aunt Sonia Gandhi, was quick to condemn the remarks as "unethical and against law". "It is condemnable... He (Varun) is associated with a party which has this (anti-minority) ideology and culture," Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters in New Delhi.

Much water has flown through the bridges of Ganga Mayya since then. His fortunes keep fluctuating, but he couldn't make any remarkable career except the membership of Lok Sabah till date. Amit Shah and Varun didn't ever hit it together. Amit Shah had lost much of his clout of ignominious defeats of Delhi and Bihar.

However, being Friday of Shri Narendra Modi, he got the second lease of political life. Assam saved him from AGYATVAS. He never allowed Varun any worthwhile space in UP or national politics. Varun's mother is often found making all sorts of right and wrong noises, but being a bahu of Indra Gandhi, she is still tolerated and considered an asset for RSS / BJP.

She survives in this set up despite her last ditch effort to propose Varun Gandhi as next CM of UP an idea that no one in BJP seemed to appreciate. Varun has been equated with the like of Yogi Adityanath - the scaremonger since then.

The wheel has come to full circle. And on this Tuesday, the BJP MP Varun Gandhi started the new drama of political retching. In the BJP bastion of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, he recalled how he broke down after reading a suicide letter written by the Hyderabad University Ph.D scholar Rohith Vemula before he hanged himself on the campus in January 2016.

"Rohith Vemula, a Dalit Ph.D student from Hyderabad committed suicide last year. When I read his letter, I broke into tears. Rohith wrote that he was taking the extreme step because he had committed the sin of taking birth in such form. This line pained my heart immensely," Varun said.

He was delivering a lecture on the "Ideas for a new India", organised by a private school there. It would be interesting to recall that Union minister and BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreye was booked along with others for allegedly abetting Rohith's suicide.

Varun Gandhi represents Sultanpur seat in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. He did also refer to an incident pertaining to discrimination with Dalits, which had occurred in Tikamgarh in the central state of Madhya Pradesh last month.

In a frontal attack against the BJP leadership, he asked, "Seventy per cent kids in a school didn't eat their lunch under the mid-day meal scheme for quite some time as the food was cooked by a woman belonging to a weaker section. What are we teaching our kids? After all, where is this country and world heading for?"

Varun said though Constitution didn't discriminate along the caste and religion basis, "The fact is 37 per cent Dalits in the country are Below Poverty Line (BPL). He said 8 per cent Dalit children die before celebrating their first birthday. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar had said we don't need political democracy, but social democracy. His thought was way ahead of his time."

To conclude, after reading about his U turns, a song of yesteryears conjured up in my mind:

One of the most memorable lyric written by Hasrat Jaypuri and gem of the great singer, created by Shankar Jaikishan that all real lovers enjoy irrespective of age: "Jaoon kahan bata eay dil….................................Banke toote yaha aarzoo ke mahal, Ye zameen aasmaan bhi gaye hain badal. Kahti hai zindagi is jaha se nikal?…"

A thing is valued where it belongs.
