Vertical gardening picks up in Thailand in a big way: A travel note
During my visit to Thailand recently, a craze for vertical gardening in the parks, public places, hotels, resorts, corporate offices, malls and houses was seen.

The concept of vertical gardening as a skill and art has been picked up by people. Many innovative ideas such as the use of discarded mineral water bottles for vertical gardening can be seen.

Even short term courses are being organised to train both adults and kids in the art and craft of vertical gardening. Also, a few companies and enterprises have started taking up vertical gardening contracts from both the government and corporate sectors.

For creating a vertical garden, the abundantly available vertical space, both on walls and off-the-walls, is efficiently utilised for the modular planting of small plants and herbs. The vertical garden neither does nor requires much professionalism or effort for looking after due to the use of timer sprinklers.

The Thai Garden Design Team has created a vertical planted wall of tropical plants at a modern condo in the heart of Bangkok on a metal frame with a sprinkler timer attached to the nearby tap which automatically turns itself on for a few minutes every morning and evening to irrigate the plants.

At a smaller scale, a vertical hydroponic system is usually used by having water drain to the bottom through an overflow type of structure in which a submerged pumps put the water back to the top of the system.

In India, Bangalore is the first city in which a few vertical gardens can be seen. Recently, in Jaipur, a vertical garden has been tried out which has become the talk of the town. The concept of roof gardening is already being used by a good number of people in Jaipur.
