Vesak in India and teachings of the Buddha said in haiku
Vesak or Buddha Purnima - that marks Gautama Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing away - falls on the day of the full moon day in Vaishakh month. This year the festival wills be observed on May 21. In India, it is a gazetted holiday.

Buddhists visit temples on Vesak to listen to the teachings of Buddha preached by monks. Many Buddhist temples display a small statue of Buddha as a baby Buddha placed in a basin filled with water and decorated with flowers. Visitors to the temple often wear white clothes and pour water over the statue symbolizing reaffirmation for purification of mind as the aim of human life.

On this day, the caged animals and birds are bought and set free by many followers as a mark of compassion and care for all living creatures, as preached by Buddha.

Buddha Purnima is observed with religious fervour with a series of programmes in Sarnath, the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon. Maha Bodhi Society of India will be organizing the administration of Ashtangsheel and offerings to Buddha on this day.

For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is the most important pilgrimage site related to the life of Gautama Buddha. The other three important pilgrimage sites are Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. It is believed that Gautama Buddha obtained Enlightenment at Bodhagaya and he first taught the Dharma at Sarnath.

Here are some haiku describing teachings of the Buddha.

Dwell not in the past. / Do not dream of the future.  / Live present moment.

Don't possess, partake / Share happiness and learning / to multiply them.

Health's the greatest gift / Contentment the greatest wealth / Love the best relation.

Desire-less minds free / Enlightenment's in pure mind / you deserve pure mind.

Must conquer you. / That's permanent victory - / All time victory.

You must walk the path / No one saves you but yourself / Discover yourself.

Your mind is your life / Sanctify your mind first / Fill mind with love.

It's eternal rule / Hatred doesn't cease by hatred, / But only by love.
