Veteran literature, film and theater figure Girish Karnad passes away at 81
Veteran literature, film and theatre personality Girish Karnad passed away at 81 on June 10 in Bengaluru. He was admitted to a hospital in the city after suffering from poor health, where he breathed his last.

His contribution to various art forms brought him the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan and the the Jnanpeeth Award. He was such a loved and modest person that social media, artists and fans have mourned the death and remembered his contribution. Karnataka has declared public on Monday to pay respect to the noted Kannada departed soul. The state government decided to cremate him with state honours holding three-day mourning.

He was a serious and meritorious student who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Karnatak Arts College, Dharwad (Karnataka University) in 1958.

Thereafter he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Magdalen in Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar (1960?63), earning his Master of Arts degree in Philosophy, Political Science and Economics. During his studentship in the UK, he was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1962?63 session.

His first play, 'Yayati', written when he was a Rhodes Scholar at the Oxford University was a hit. According to a Wikipedia post, Girish Raghunath Karnad (19 May 1938 ? 10 June 2019) was an Indian actor, film director, Kannada writer playwright and a Rhodes Scholar, who predominantly worked in South Indian cinema and Bollywood. Later, he switched over to TV.
