GHALIB INSTITUTE in New Delhi recently has felicitated noted Urdu scholar professor Masood Hussain Khan for his striking contribution to Urdu language and literature. He was honoured by Prof A R Kidwai, former Governor of Haryana at a function in Aligarh Muslim University.
Professor Masood Hussain Khan is a distinguished literary personality. He previously has served as vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and Jamia Urdu, Aligarh. Prof A R Kidwai released a book on Prof Masood Hussain Khan’s life and contribution.
Speaking at the occasion, noted historian Prof Irfan Habib applauded Aligarh Muslim University’s effort in producing an academician as Prof Masood’s caliber and content. He added that Prof Masood is a rationalist; he adopted a scientific linguistic approach.
It is to be noted that Masood Khan Magnum opus, a history of Urdu language, published in 1948, advanced a new theory of Urdu’s birth, contradicting all theories hitherto popular among scholars.
At 92 years, the veteran Urdu scholar has authored several books of repute including Rise and fall of Urdu in India.
.It is so pathetic and unfortunate that great authors like Masood Hasan Khan are unknown to the crowd outside the Urdu circle. The noted writer Khwaja Ahmed Abbas had once written his famous book "I'm not an iceland" first in Urdu and hardly few copies of the book were sold. It was a hit when published in English. During my student life in Aligarh one of my friend from Allahbad brought me fifteen copies of a great work of Prof Ehtasham Hussain to be distributed freely among the literary circle as there were no buyers. I know that economic condition of Urdu readers is also respobsible for this strait but we, the Urdu readers also suffer from the disease 'to borrow the book' even when we are well off. Mazhar Saheb, you are going a good job as you often write about Urdu writers. Thanks.
