Veteran theatre, TV and film actor Tom Alter suffering from stage four skin cancer; son says his condition is stable
Veteran film, theatre and TV personality, Tom Alter has been diagnosed with stage four skin cancer. The actor's family confirmed the news on Monday. This 67-year-old Indian actor of American descent has been a very popular face in the film and TV world.

He is a multifaceted actor who has shown his finest acting skills in shows like Bharat Ek Khoj, Zabaan Sambhalke, Shaktiman, and Captain Vyom. He is also one of the finest actors to have ever graced the silver screen with roles in films like Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Gandhi, and Kranti.

His son, Jamie Alter confirmed the news that the veteran actor had been admitted to a Mumbai hospital for the past one week and his condition is said to be stable. Alter, who is also a Padma Shri awardee had actively been participating in theatre plays until last month.

The news is a sudden shock to many of his fans who have seen him quite active on stage. Jamie told that ever since the break out of the news, they had been inundated with calls and messages from friends and the film industry. Alter has been playing the role of Mirza Ghalib in the play "Ghalib" which was staged in Delhi recently.

As confirmed by Jamie, Alter had to go through a thumb amputation last year as part of the treatment but there wasn't any other complication.

Speaking to IANS he said, "It is what is called a squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer). It is a relapse of the same thing which had happened last year and unfortunately, for various reasons, it was not detected at that time and has come back."

He also said, "There were no symptoms of illness till last week and now we get to know that he is suffering from stage four cancer. At present, his condition is stable and he is responding well to the treatment. His vital organs are functioning fine and the best doctors from across the country are being consulted."

The director of Alter's upcoming film "Redrum A Love Story" Dhruv Sachdeva expressed his concern and was speechless.

Reports say that the actor might have to stay in the hospital for another week till doctors begin his next round of medication.
