Vidarbha farmers want Deshmukh sacked as union minister
The apex court had criticised Deshmukh for directing the police to go soft on a Congress MLA in Maharashtra, who was also a moneylender and against whom police had received complaints.
VIDARBHA FARMERS and farm widows have strongly criticised the remarks of Indian prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during his recent visit to Maharashtra along with President Pratibha Patil. The Prime Minister had adviced the judiciary to exercise restraint in the wake of Justice A.K. Ganguly's remarks describing as “shameless”  the continuance of  Vilasrao Deshmukh, as the Rural Development Minister.

The apex court had criticised Deshmukh for directing the police to go soft on a Congress MLA in Maharashtra, who is also a moneylender and against whom police had received complaints.

Hundreds of Vidarbha farmers and farm widows will stage one day hunger strike on February 8 and will start indefinite hunger strike from February 16 to press for the demand of sacking union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who allegedly shielded the Congress MLA working as a money lender in the drought affected district.

In a press note, Kishore Tiwari of Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti said that this is very serious matter as the man responsible for 8,000 farmer suicides was being applauded and promoted. He further said that this decision is akin to rubbing salt to wounds of farmers widows and family members, who have lost bread earners to debt and will continue with their mass protest until the minister is sacked and booked under charges of homicide. He warned that the intensity of the protest will multiply if their demands are not met with.
