AFTER WINNING the national award for acting in The Dirty Picture, Bollywood actor Vidya Balan, has been made the brand ambassador of the rural development ministry to spread awareness and advocate practices about sanitation and cleanliness among the rural masses in the country.
Balan will appear in the posters to propagate construction and use of toilets, habit of hand washing, personal hygiene and managing waste, said Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh.
Ramesh intends to make rural areas of the country free of open defecation within a decade. According to him, intense efforts will be made in this decade to make all the 2,65,000 gram panchayats in the country open defecation-free.
