Vijay Kumar Saraswat would be the new Chief of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He will assume charge from September 1, after the present incumbent, M Natarajan retires.
VIJAY KUMAR Saraswat has been appointed as the new Chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister. He will assume the new responsibility from present incumbent M Natarajan, who retires on September 1, an official spokesman said .
A Padamshri recipient, Saraswat is presently Chief Controller, Research and Development (Missiles and Strategic Systems) and spearheaded the development of country’s strategic and tactical missile systems including the Agni series of strategic missiles.
He holds a PhD in combustion engineering and started his career in DRDO in 1972.
As project director of Prithvi missile, Saraswat steered the design, development, production and induction of first indigenous surface-to-surface missile system into armed forces.
As Program Director, Air Defence, he pioneered the concept of theatre defence system and integration of national air defence elements. Saraswat was also part of the team responsible for development of number of critical missile technologies that were under denial due to Missile Technology Control regime, thus making India self-reliant in missile technologies.
