Vijender becomes World No 1 in boxing
International Boxing Association declared Vijender Singh as world's top ranked pugilist in the middle weight category. He has achieved this milestone by dethroning the reigning champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan.
OLYMPIC AND World Championship bronze medallist, Vijender Singh has crossed yet another milestone by becoming the first Indian to be the world’s top ranked pugilist in the middle weight category (75 kgs).

He has achieved this milestone by dethroning the reigning champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan.  Atoev is currently ranked third in the list. Olympic silver medalist Emillio Correa Bayeux from Cuba is ranked second in the list with 2,500 points.  The list was released by International Boxing Association.

Vijender is also the first Indian to have won a medal in the World Championships that were held in Milan. Reacting to the news that he is the world number one, Vijender said that he was simply 'elated' by the news. He also iterated that it was a fantastic feeling to be on top of the list and that this would only spur him to do bettering future events.

The other Indians list includes former World Youth Champion Thockchom Nanao Singh who slipped three places to be ranked number 8 in the light weight category (48kgs). In the Asian’s Championship held in China, Nanao won the silver medal, however, he lost out in the second round in the World Championships.

In the feather weight category (57 kgs) Akhil Kumar was ranked number 10. Kumar could not continue in the World Championships held in Milan after the first round due to a wrist injury. Kumar has a total of 1050 points.  Olympian Jitender Kumar in the feather weight category (54 kg) dropped to the 14th spot after he lost the World Championship in the first round itself.

Dinesh Kumar who made it to the quarter finals of the World Championship retained the sixth spot yet again in the light weight category with 1,550 points.  In the fly weight category, Sujoy Singh was ranked 17th.
