Vinod Khanna: Rare pictures of the sexy flamboyant sanyasi and his spiritual encounter with Osho
Almost everyone knows that in 1975, Bollywood's erstwhile heartthrob, actor Vinod Khanna quit stardom and became a sanyasi, to be rechristened as Swami Vinod Bharti. But not many know that it was director Mahesh Bhatt who had introduced Khanna to Osho.

Vinod Khanna was a changed man after this spiritual encounter. In Khanna's own words, "I have always been a seeker. In the film industry I had money, glamour, fame but wondered now what? Initially, I visited Osho's ashram in Pune every weekend. I even diverted shooting schedules to Pune. I was finally initiated on December 31, 1975. When I announced my retirement from films, nobody believed me."

Veteran Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna, who passed away at the age of 70 after losing the battle against advanced bladder carcinoma (bladder cancer) on Thursday at a Mumbai hospital, acted in around 140 Bollywood films. But, one is compelled to think, given his talent and his stardom at that point in his career, there could have been many more, elevating him to the status of superstar just like his contemporary rival, Amitabh Bachchan.

But then, Vinod Khanna was no ordinary man. Something stirred him up so deep that he quit stardom, his film projects mid-way and even his family back home to join his guru Rajneesh Osho in Rajneeshpuram, in Oregon, USA.

But, before moving to Oregon, Vinod Khanna stayed at the Osho Ashram in Koregaon Park, Pune between 1976 and 1980. In 1980, Vinod Khanna moved to the US with Osho Rajneesh.

During his stay at Rajneeshpuram in Oregon, Khanna served as a gardener, unfazed by his reputation of a Bollywood star.

However, the actor's devotion to Osho took a heavy toll on his personal life. His relations with his first wife Geetanjali turned sour, culminating into divorce.

With passage of time, Vinod Khanna became one of the most loved disciples of Osho. Eventually, he proved to be a true follower of his guru and was dubbed as 'Nav Sanyasi' by Osho, who remarkably managed to balance his reel life with his real life, something which most celebrities struggle to achieve.

It isn't surprising to note that the actor after venturing on the path of spiritualism, became a much calmer and grounded person, which is evident from the more balanced roles that he chose in the later part of his career.

Vinod Khanna visited the Pune ashram of Osho in 1990 when Osho Rajneesh passed away. During his visit, he made sure to personally meet each disciple. That was Vinod Khanna - a star, a sanyasi and also a politician - who mastered the fine art of balancing one's personal life. People like him are rare to come by.
