Violence against women and girls must end now for a fair and equal world: UN Chief Guterres
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (IDEVM) was observed by UN Agencies and Women Rights Groups on November 25 across the globe to create awareness about and taking measures to mitigate violence against women which was 'most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it' as reported by the UN.

This year the observance has the theme 'Orange the World: #HearMeToo' with orange as the unifying colour of solidarity. It has been stated that the #HearMeToo hashtag is designed to send a clear message: "violence against women and girls must end now, and we all have a role to play."

UN Secretary-General Antonio  Guterres  in his message stated, "Not until the half of our population represented by women and girls can live free from fear, violence and everyday insecurity, can we truly say we live in a fair and equal world."

According to the UN, violence against women manifests itself in 'physical, sexual and psychological forms, encompassing: intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide);sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber- harassment); human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation); female genital mutilation; and child marriage'.

Violence against women is tied to broader issues of power and control in our societies.  We live in a male-dominated society.  Women are made vulnerable to violence through the multiple ways in which we keep them unequal, added the UN Chief in his released message.
