THERE IS violence on the streets of Tehran as clashes broke out between anti-government protesters and the security forces in Iran on Sunday (December 27). At least fifteen people including a relative of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi are reported to have been killed in one of the worst outbreaks of violence in the country.

Iranian authorities, however, denied the killings but later said that those, who died were member of terrorist groups. Meanwhile, Iran watchers have said that this outbreak was the outpouring of immense public anger against the regime headed by President Ahmadinejad.

Violent scenes were witnessed as protesters clashed with riot police and Basij militiamen. There were scenes of police stations being burnt and Basiji buildings set to fire by the protesters in Tehran. In fact Tehran watchers said that this was the final push against the government as the time was up for the oppressive regime in Tehran.

The protesters are not only venting anger against the President but also Iran's supreme religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is the main force behind the theocratic government.
