What these stats fail to reflect is the way he approaches his game. With an aggressive mindset, he times the ball to the fence with ease, flicks the bowler past square leg, drives the ball on the up with elegance and charges the bowlers down the wicket with arrogance. He has almost all the shots in the book and has no fear in executing them, irrespective of the bowler's reputation. It is this arrogance that has helped him become a successful cricketer. Those who have been witnessing the batsmen play for the last year or so are in awe, given his class and the way he splits gap.
Very often people have been seen comparing him with Sachin Tendulkar, especially the Sachin of 1998, where he was dominating teams all around the world with his willow. In the year 1998, he scored the most runs in a calendar year – 1894 runs. If we look at Kohli's performance in 2012 (February till date), he has scored more than 1300 runs. There are few ODI matches that Kohli is still left to play in the year. With this kind of form, he is sure to score heavy runs. It would not be surprising if he scores 400-500 runs in final quarter of the year.
One has to remember Sachin scored the above mentioned runs in the ninth year of his international cricket, whereas Kohli is still young and is in his fourth year of international cricket. His consistency level has been amazing throughout. The best part of Kohli is that whenever he scores a century or good runs, India are in a stronger position to walk away with the match.
He has been the mainstay of the Indian batting line up. There is one major similarity between the Tendulkar of prime and Virat the present – the team is highly dependent on the success of the batsmen. If Virat fails the batting order also looks to be in a sort of problem as was witnessed in the latest T20 match against the Aussies in the T20 World Cup Super eight stage where Kohli could not score much and the Indian team failed to put up a strong score on the board. Had he come off good, the result could have been different. The players in the middle order thrive on the platform that has been built by Kohli for the rest of the batsmen to fire.
It is too early to draw any conclusive comparison with any of the Indian players for the Delhi player has just started his cricket days with the Indian team. But, there is no doubt about the quality that the player possesses. In the near future, he would be shouldering the responsibility of the Indian team, so the only way he can move is forward, which is only going to help Team India.
