Virbhadra Singh accuses BJP of tapping his phone calls
Virbhadra Singh, the Union minister for steel has accused Bharatiya Janata Party government of allegedly 'tapping' his landline and mobile phones. He further alleged that state intelligence men are following him and keeping a tab on his movements.
UNION MINISTER for steel Virbhadra Singh has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Himachal Pradesh of allegedly ‘tapping’ his landline and mobile phones. He also said that there is a ‘police raj’ in the state and freedom and honour of the people are not safe.

Addressing a press conference in Shimla, he said that the government had no right to tap the phones even if he was not a minister. He cautioned that he would write to the Union home minister in this regard if the vigilance and police did not stop this 'undemocratic' practice.

He further alleged that state intelligence men are following him and keeping a tab on his movements.

Singh who was irked over the FIR filed against him and his wife in a CD case and alleged that it was a conspiracy to force him to resign from the Cabinet. The Dhumal government is misusing the state machinery and going out of ways to implicate him in fake cases, he said. He, however, hoped that he would be acquitted of the charges as had happened in the past.

He alleged that the CD in question was provided to former minister Vijay Singh Mankotia, who released it on the eve of Hamirpur Lok Sabha by-election in May 2007 to tarnish his image. “I will fight it out politically and legally and emerge victorious,” he thundered.

Singh said that he could also have booked many BJP leaders but he preferred to bury the hatchets, while the Dhumal government chose to waste time in witch-hunting and framing the opponents in false cases to settle scores.

Responding to the allegations made by the Union minister, state forest minister JP Nadda said that it was ridiculous even to presume that the landline and mobile phones of Singh are being tapped.

Rubbishing the allegations as ‘baseless’, Nadda said that he cannot believe Singh to make such irresponsible allegations as he is fully aware that the telecommunication department is under the Union government and the state government cannot make any request for ‘tapping’ the phones. The people of the state are not likely to be taken in by such false propaganda as they are fully aware of the truth and in case some other agency is ‘tapping’ the phones, the government has nothing to do with it, he maintained.

Nadda said that Singh should not be afraid of the case registered against him by the vigilance in case he has not committed any wrong, as the law will take its own course and truth will come out. Stressing that in a democratic country, everyone is equal before the law and investigating agency is doing its job. Nadda said that no one should have any grouse against the vigilance bureau which was investigating the case handed over to it by the previous Congress government.

The minister also expressed surprise over the statement of the Union minister claiming that he had indicated late Sant Ram, the then forest minister in Sagar Katha case to prove himself honest and asserted that the decision in that case was changed by the then Chief Minister (Singh) and not by the forest minister.

Nadda also disputed the claim of Singh that he was given clean chit by CBI in 24 charges and said that only one case pertaining to land was investigated by the CBI. He said that there is no reason for deploying CID personnel to keep a watch on him and said that if some security men are sitting outside his house, they must be deployed with him for security reasons.
