Vodafone Essar, the third biggest telephone services company increased its customer base by 192,761 after mobile number portability entered India. Sixth-ranked Idea Cellular was second with net gain of 150,789 customers.
TELECOM MAJOR Vodafone has proved to be the biggest gainer of the Mobile Number Portability service launched recently in the country. Vodafone has grabbed the maximum number of customers after the launch of the new feature, which allows users to change their telecom service provider, while retaining their current mobile number.
This feature was launched in November in a north Indian state and it was in mid - January that it was opened to all users nationwide.COAI (Cellphone Operators Association of India) has said that despite the churn among mobile users, the MNP has not proved to be a game changer for the mobile companies. It said that only 1 per cent of mobile users swapped the service providers.
COAI also said that Vodafone managed to attract the largest chunk of customer through their attractive services and packages. The company managed to add 192,765 customers, who switched from other networks. Idea was at number two after Vodafone and it gained 150,789 customers. The biggest loser was Reliance Communications, which lost 3,06,417 customers. Market leader Bharti Airtel could also not perform as expected and added just 148, 215 customers to its kitty. As per statistics, India is the second largest mobile market in the world and it is also growing extremely fast.
