Voice For Rights organizes workshop on Juvenile Justice, Child Sexual Abuse in Jammu
Voice For Rights (VR), an NGO working for protection of human rights in collaboration with J&K Police and supported by Jammu Peoples Peace Forum, organized a one day workshop on “Introduction of New Law on Juvenile Justice and Protection of Children from Sexual Abuse” at police auditorium yesterday.

In the workshop a galaxy of police officers, young lawyers, media persons and intelligentsia listened to the thoughtful lectures of Advocate Anant Asthana and Advocate Aagney Sail, resource persons from New Delhi.

The workshop was inaugurated by Inspector General of Jammu Police Rajesh Kumar Yadav while DIG Jammu Shakeel Ahmed Beigh was guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion IGP Jammu Rajesh Kumar Yadav asked police officers to be sensitive towards Juveniles and deal their cases with care and caution.

He said that children who are at the stage of growing up don’t actually know the consequences of their actions and hence they must treat them keeping in view the behavior of their own children at home.

IGP also appreciated the role of Voice For Rights for organizing such a workshop for police officers saying it will go a long way in creating awareness among police officers in view of the new law introduced in J&K recently.

The first session of the workshop was dedicated to the introduction of new law on Juvenile Justice known as Jammu and Kashmir Juvenile (Care & Protection) Act, 2013 in which advocate Asthana dwelt at length on the need, necessity and implementation of the new act.

Asthana also explained the provisions of the act as well as intricacies of child friendly policing, standards and practices. Later he also cleared some doubts and explained other details of the act through audio visual presentation and interactive sessions.

In the second session Advocate Aagney Sail presented a detailed paper on introduction of new law on child sexual abuse and also held an interactive session answering the questions of the participants.

Deepika Singh Rajawat, President, Voice for Rights (VR) presented her paper on J&K Human Rights situation and need to strengthen the laws to protect the human rights of the citizens.

The workshop was held to promote a better understanding of child rights, to sanitize the stake holders towards protection of rights of the children and to encourage participation of civil society, media and public spirited citizens in Child Rights Movement through thoughtful lectures of the resource persons.

Earlier senior advocate Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed, Vice President VR welcomed the guests and explained the objectives of the workshop and mission of VR. King Bharati, Senior Journalist and General Secretary Voice For Rights while presenting vote of thanks laid emphasis on the protection of Child Rights and requested the stake holders to be sensitive towards the issue.

Conference was supported by Jammu Peoples Peace Forum a newly constituted NGO working to maintain peace and communal harmony. Workshop was coordinated by Advocate Benish, Advocate Zulker, Advocate Irfan, Advocate Himani Jamwal, Subha Zutshi and Tanishka.
