Vote for sustainable development in 2019 general elections
Year 2019 brings a new election season to our country. Hence, it is time to think of the priorities of human society responsibly. We, as global citizens, have several needs: security, safety, respect, equity, equality, comfort, growth, development, etc.

But the most important need for any country is the natural environment, which alone would guarantee the country the ability to sustain a culture of liberal democracy for future generations and preserve humanity for years to come. This is called sustainable development and it ensures economic development without side-effects on the natural environment. Sustainable development requires general awareness among communities. It can prevent future wars, preserve the ecosystem, and ensure that humankind would not only survive, but also live in happiness, prosperity and peace for centuries to come.

Recently, there have been many developments worldwide on sustainable development: The Paris Pact of 2015, European countries' restricting the use of motor vehicles, the first solar flight around the world, China's restriction on population growth, and of course, India's Swachh Bharat.

But sadly, we also receive bad news such as melting polar ice caps, poor air quality in metropolitan cities, garbage burning in the streets, impossible-to-clean landfills, river pollution, eutrophication of lakes, and threat to endangered animals. However, we still can expect a brighter future.

Although Swachh Bharat did not magically sweep away all the garbage heaps, it has caught the imagination of India, and so we can expect clean streets in due course, hopefully with the involvement of shrewd entrepreneurs. The first solar flight around the world can give way to solar airplanes, or even solar gliders which might put an end to the craze for motor vehicles amongst the people. Cars and two-wheelers of the future will run on electricity, and accessible and efficient recharge stations will be widely available.

Large-scale use of recycled paper and commercial silviculture would slow down deforestation and promote quicker afforestation. We can even find ways to bring back the dead lakes and purify the polluted rivers. Moreover, there are American space corporations considering the possibility of asteroid mining. This can also prevent the deforestation of forest land for mining minerals essential for our modern gadgets like smartphones, computers, etc.

It is obvious that the environment is the top priority and that voters have to vote for leaders who understand this fact, or else, they would end up voting for those who would wipe out everything that our ancestors have worked for.

So, let people in India and in every other democratic country in the world vote for leaders who would make the dreams of the environmentalists a reality. Then, the future would certainly be brighter, more prosperous and more democratic.
