W. Bengal villagers defend Kangaroo court's gang rape order: Shouldn't they be booked for breaching Constitutional norms?
After the heinous gang rape as per a Kangaroo court's order in the village Chowhatta of West Bengal, it’s surprising to know that the villagers have no remorse! In a striking solidarity with the accused, from children to elders, villagers stand hand-in-hand.

It’s just 30 kms away from district head quarter Suri and not appears to be purely a tribal village. Young people wear jeans, women wear night gown, some had mobiles, though there was no electricity connection but people use current through hooking! Thus one can’t say that they are from Stone Age! Even tribal folks in India are very famous for their good social rules, women independence, respect to elder, dignifying culture etc!

Thus when the World is condemning this gang rape, how can they dare to defend this heinous act and protest against police action? Is lack of education is a reason? I don’t think so? Education is to enlighten one’s mind on wider window. But traditions and culture doesn’t require school going as it is passed from one generation to another through dialogue and story-telling.

I am just not making this village a single out. The Khap-Panchayat’s too kills couple’s for marrying in same Gotra! They don’t care police or law. Honour killing is also a regular affair! No political party ever tries to go against them. Reason that they have their voting power or even clearly saying that they do all illegal and criminal things simply on the power of their voting right!

If any political parties raise voice against their illegal crimes, they would vote against them and ensure that the particular party couldn’t be elected. That’s perhaps the reason when AAP’s Yogendra Yadav said ‘Khap’s are not so bad’.

Coming back to this village, they are united now. Thus except lip service at Kolkata or Delhi, no party at ground level would seek for stricter action because of loss of vote of that village! I can’t blame the politicians for this weakness; rather it’s darker side of our democracy, where political parties had to compromise! In fact in the compromising note in this case, one signatory is a TMC party worker for which Mamata government is subject to lot of criticism!

It’s good that Supreme Court has taken suo motto cognizance and asked for reports. I think only way to control such Kangaroo courts is to cease their voting right for at least 10 years! If court can cease voting right of late Balasaheb Thakre, why not the same for such villages for violating democratic norms and law of land. Blaming only politicians who are dependent on votes will not solve the problem. Rather actions against those who misuse their voting right as a tool to blackmail politicians also need to be punished!

Democracy is such a set up where everybody is equally responsible and accountable. Thus I recommend the entire village which defends the gang rape at the moment and Khap Panchayats involved in honor killing must be booked for breach of Constitutional provisions and human rights, indecency and insulting the nation. Such kangaroo courts must be debarred from voting right for significant period!
