Wake-up time for country's youth
Freedom is 'the word' today but the youth is hardly aware of the expense that was paid to gain this freedom. This is a nation of martyrs who laid down their lives for the country and its time, the youth take on the baton and make their country proud
TODAY, AS a youth, I feel that we have a lot to give to our country. The dreams and the passion of the youth force can lead a country to the pinnacle of success. We have had great young leaders and intellectuals. Today, we think we are really following what our freedom fighters expected of us. But I feel, we have let them down on many occasions.

If not all, the majority of the youth in India might not be interested in the affairs of the country. If I am mistaken, I would be more than happy, but it’s for sure that today the importance of freedom is gradually becoming ornamental to us -- it’s not really anything more than an important government holiday. Even I feel that I have let down what was expected of me. Today, most young people are busy in settling careers, but we have no time for the constructive development of our nation towards prosperity -- mostly on a majority basis.

The dreams that were sowed by Swami Vivekanand, Netaji, Gandhiji and other respected patriots for an ideal society are now only adorning the text books. The urban youth are rather busy in sending SMS, chatting with friends and chillaxing in shopping malls or watching movies.

The are hardly bothered about the development of the country. However, the biggest matter of concern, which haunts them day and night is how important and popular are they among the girls (in case of boys) or vice versa.

The irony here is, is this for what our freedom fighters shed their blood? Are we really fulfilling the dreams of the ideal youth force they had dreamt of? One cannot overlook the fact that the patrotic feelings might be there in everybody at different levels, but is it not the time to bring out our hidden feelings or do we need films like Lagaan, Legend of Bhagat Singh or even ads like ’Jaago Re’ by Tata Tea to reform us as the ideal youth citizens of the nation that will make all of us proud. It’s time to give it a thought – for me, too!
