It was indeed a shocking surprise to find a rarely-seen direct advertisement-attack on small screens by 'Rin' of Hindustan Unilever on 'Tide' by Proctor & Gamble when 'Tide' was projected both in audio and in visuals as inferior.
IT WAS indeed a shocking surprise to find a rarely-seen direct advertisement-attack on small screens by ‘Rin’ of Hindustan Unilever on ‘Tide’ by Proctor & Gamble when ‘Tide’ was projected both in audio and in visuals as inferior to ‘Rin’ as if no monitoring body exists in one of world’s biggest consumer-market of India with rupees 12000 crores annual market of detergent powders.
It is not understood how the advertisements in bad taste continued for more than a week with bodies like The Advertising Standard Council of India (ASCI) having its eyes closed on unethical move of Hindustan Unilever.
The controversial TV advertisement continued even after stay-order granted by Kolkatta High Court. But such controversies must be effectively checked by not only providing damages to the erring firm but also requiring such firm to air unconditional apology in air-time equivalent to air-time for which such advertisements got placed on TV channels.
.During the budget session comments offered by different groups of the community, one section of community located in Mumbai
in Dhobi Ghat, known as Dhobis, had to say like this: "budget hardly makes any difference to our lives" - we continue to
start the day and end the day in the same way as we have been doing for the past so many decades and prices are only going
up and up whereas our remuneration is not correspondingly going up. Perhaps, it will be a better solution if all those
hospitals, five star hotels, three star hotels, airports etc. etc.etc. who are now taking the services of the dhobis can
replace the same by going into heavy duty washing machines which will consume less of water and keep the environment
more healthy. At the same time ways and means need to be found out if all these dhobies can be recloated to a better
remunerative jobs through NREGA or through agricultural or any trade so that they do not feel cheated or left out.
It will be interesting to see in the future if advertisements are made suggesting their soaps use less water for cleaning
purpose.
